Preface- The entire procession of a musical performance is this: composition-performance-appreciation-criticism. composition and performance (the supply) have always had the prerogative of interpretation. However, in today's multicultural, multidisciplinary, diversified society, with music aficionados and critics (the demand), does this absolutist prerogative still hold? Origin collects the works of four contemporary composers in their prime, all hailing from different countries with different cultural backgrounds. Each has taken inspiration from his own life experiences or cultural observations in composing concertos for four Chinese instruments:Chinese percussion, Zhongruan, Dizi, and Erhu, bringing us a rich perspective on Chinese music. Singaporean composer WANG Chenwei excels at integrating the cultures and languages of various ethnic groups into his music. Finding inspiration in the exhibition of musical instruments from the Shang dynasty at Taipei's National Palace Museum ,WANG composed the concerto for Chinese Percussion Bronze Age of Shang. Playing his ability to integrate, he conveys the majesty of his source material through a large number of Chinese percussion instruments. One unique touch he added to this piece was having the musicians recite fragments from the Chinese classic Book of Poetry using ancient pronunciations. In Cinnamon Twig Decoction, Malaysian composer Simon KONG Su Leong takes a page from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with its subtlety in diagnosis and conditioning, giving the piece a meticulous design that has listeners hanging intently on every note. The Canadian-raised Vincent HO, who has been lauded for his profound expressiveness, composed The Water Dragon Concerto for Zhongruan and Chinese Orchestra, which depicts the legend of the Eastern Water Dragon, all in a beautiful musical tapestry. HO wrote the piece on the occasion of his daughter's birth in a year of the dragon. Taiwanese compose WANG Yun-Ya's Xuan Wan Erhu concerto conveys the imaginative power of Kaohsiung's scenic Sizihwan bay through a glimpse of southern Taiwan's turquoise waters. Origin also brings together these composers' life experiences, the musical interpretations of premiere soloists, and the emergent wisdom of the conductor and orchestra. And this is all just one view of the self and the myriad of nature. We hope that you listen to Origin from the cultural interpretation of your choice. Like good wind or good water, Origin is best when spread and shared, as it nourishes both soul and sense.
