Taipei Chinese Orchestra has set out yet another exci t ing expec tat ion for the upcoming 2010 as the year to “Setting Sail onto World Stage” and “Leading the Pack.” The new season continues to bring world-renowned artists locally, and sees TCO striding confidently towards international music festivals. TCO has successfully indexed on the international par this year.
In the upcoming 2009/2010 season, TCO boasts a lineup of splendor right here in Taipei, includingfamous Chinese opera star Hai-Min Wei, well soughtafter cellists Julian Lloyd Webber, Mischa Maisky and Anssi Karttunen, Erhu master HuiFen Ming, violinist Lina Yu, pianist ChengZong Yin, pipaist Man Wu, renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie and flutist Sharon Bezaly. More importantly, TCO is bound to trek the international music scene in Schumann Festival Dusseldorf, Shanghai World Expo and a repeat invitation of Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts. Much anticipated recording projects would be TCO's fourth and fth collaboration with BIS label starring Evelyn Glennie and Sharon Bezaly.
TCO's collaborations with international acclaimed artists are means of pushing the orchestra to a new artistic level as well as the international stage. In the past, an album solely devoted to Chinese music repertoire had not received wide popularity, and faced difficulty in obtaining any international contracts. In TCO's past endeavors in recording projects, we successfully marketed to the world the works of Taiwanese composers and traditional Taiwanese folk ballads, realized trombone playing Chinese opera, and saxophone sounding pipe tunes.
In the new year, we've not only braced ourselves to a large-scale interchange between western and Chinese percussions, we've taken a step farther engaging a master cellist to resound the beauty of Mongolian ballads to the world. In addition to performing more Chinese contemporary works, TCO has made it our mission to take these brilliant works global. We shall take the navigator role in the Chinese music world and inject hope and possibilities for Chinese orchestras.
In the December edition of Gramophone magazine, a review of TCO's recording with BIS Records, Whirling Dance , praised the high virtuosity of orchestra's performance and unlike music such as Yellow River or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , TCO did not have to cater to the western taste of Chinese music to stand out its uniqueness. This is recognition and indicator that TCO has triumphantly paved a new road of Chinese Music which only”Chinese Orchestra” is able to achieve.
Our long-term goal lies in searching for the coordinates that the Chinese orchestra will stand unwaveringly. It is neither world music, nor an Asian conversion of western classical music, it will stand tall as a new breed of music universally. We envision TCO will pioneer new grounds and new perspectives in the world.
